Yesterday my university class had their picture taken to promote the campaign to free the in-prisoned Aljazeera journalists locked up in Egypt for no currently stated reason. The journalists have not been currently charged with anything provoking a worldwide campaign from journalists and governments to free arabic staff.
The government in Cario have said their cases have been referred to the criminal court but Aljazeera have not been notified of any charges against the reporters, this has many worried about media rights and freedom of speech within Egypt.
A press conference is being held today by the Aljazeera network urging the Egyptian Government to immediately release the journalists who are being held for what currently can be seen as no reason at all. The US government is also calling for their release.
Other than possibly publishing stories that are not in the governments interest I can see no reason why the authorities would jail these reporters, which if true is a massive infringement of media democracy and could make the situation in Egypt even worse for a country that has been through so much in the past few years.
Having been to Egypt nearly three years ago, I have seen how hard life can be for them, so I think it is vital that everyone expresses their outrage to the Egyptian authorities to release the journalists who have seemingly been in-prisoned just for doing their job.
